Shockwave Therapy

What is Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy ?

Shockwave therapy is a highly effective, non-invasive treatment protocol used for the regeneration of tissues such as bone, tendon, muscle and skin. Shockwaves are mechanical sound waves that work by breaking down scar tissue-adhesions, increasing circulation, stimulating new blood vessel growth and driving stem cell migration to the area. Shockwaves are a scientifically proven treatment of acute and chronic pain, with virtually no side effects; most conditions are resolved after 3-5 sessions.

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is a modern and highly effective treatment method: high-energy sound waves are introduced into the painful areas of the body. With this innovative therapy approach, pathological alterations of tendons, ligaments, capsules, muscles and bones can be eliminated systematically.

The beneficial effects of shock wave therapy are often experienced after only 1 or 2 treatments. The therapy eliminates pain and restores full mobility, thus improving your quality of life.

What are Shockwaves ?

Shock waves occur in the atmosphere during explosive events, for example during lightning strokes, or when airplanes break through the sound barrier. Shock waves are acoustic pulses characterized by high positive pressure amplitudes and a steep pressure increase compared to the ambient pressure.

In the medical world, shock waves have been used since around 1980 to disintegrate kidney stones, for instance. In modern pain therapy, shock wave energy is conducted from the place of its generation – the shock wave generator – to the painful body regions, where it unfolds its healing capacities.

What are the effects of Shockwaves?

Shock waves accelerate the healing process by mobilizing the body’s self-healing powers. They stimulate metabolic activity and improve blood circulation. Damaged tissue gradually regenerates and eventually heals.

Shockwaves work by disrupting and removing any tissue that should not be present, such as scar tissue, while simultaneously stimulating new blood vessel growth (angiogenesis) to the impacted tissue. As a result of treatment, tissue responds with better range of motion due to fewer restrictions and overall improvement in circulation to the area. More circulation and less scar tissue means better healing

What is the difference between Shockwave and Radial Shockwave (pressure wave)

Shock waves and pressure waves differ not only in regard to their physical properties and mode of generation, but also in terms of the magnitude of the standard parameters (pressure amplitude, pulse duration, impact etc.) used and the therapeutic tissue penetration depths achieved (Fig. 16). Interestingly, despite the physical differences and the resulting different application areas (superficial or deep target areas), the stimulation effects and therapeutic mechanisms seem to present certain similarities. Radial pressure waves are ideal for the treatment of superficial pain, for instance. In the therapy of myofascial pain syndromes, radial pressure waves even provide an indispensable muscle smoothing technique that is employed before or after focused shock wave application. Local painful spots, chronic insertional tendinopathies and deep trigger points on the other hand should be treated instead with focused shock waves [16]. Planar/defocused shock waves are preferably used for the treatment of muscular trigger points and dermatological/aesthetic indications [6].
